During his visit, he interacted with Dr. Ketan Mohitkar, Member Secretary of ICTRD, engaging in meaningful discussions on innovation, rural technologies, and the importance of practical solutions for societal development.
Carrying decades of memories, experiences, and innovative ideas, Mr. Bhawalkar refreshed his remarkable journey by revisiting the milestones of his innovations and exchanging valuable insights with the ICTRD. He showcased several of his innovative concepts, explained the inspiration behind his inventions, and emphasized how simple, low-cost innovations can create a lasting impact on everyday life. His enthusiasm and dedication, even at the age of 77, inspired everyone present and reflected his lifelong commitment to innovation.
Mr. Anand P. Bhawalkar, a resident of Nagpur, has had an extraordinary career that blends professional excellence with an enduring passion for innovation. Although he spent nearly four decades serving as a Senior Audit Officer in the Audit and Accounts Division of the Indian Railways, his true calling was always innovation. Alongside his demanding professional responsibilities, he continuously devoted his time to designing, fabricating, and developing practical engineering solutions for everyday challenges.
Over the years, Mr. Bhawalkar has developed more than 30 innovative designs, complete with detailed engineering drawings and implementation plans. His innovations focus on affordable, practical, and sustainable solutions that can significantly improve the quality of life, particularly in rural communities.
Some of his noteworthy innovations include innovative household products, a sugarcane transplanting system designed to reduce manual labour and improve agricultural productivity, a smokeless chulha (cookstove) that promotes cleaner and healthier cooking, a windmill based on the principle of bird wing movement, and several innovative remodeling and engineering solutions aimed at solving practical everyday problems.
His remarkable contributions have earned him several recognitions, including the prestigious Dr. Meghnad Saha Research National Award conferred by the Mahatma Phule Talent Research Academy, honouring his outstanding work in innovation and applied research.
After his retirement from the Indian Railways, Mr. Bhawalkar finally had the opportunity to dedicate himself completely to his lifelong passion. He joined the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization (MGIRI), where he became actively involved in developing technologies aimed at addressing rural challenges.
At MGIRI, one of his earliest assignments was to work on one of India’s most challenging engineering problems—the development of a practical coconut climbing device. Despite numerous attempts by innovators across the country and several award-winning prototypes, the problem has largely remained unresolved. Drawing upon his decades of experience in design and innovation, Mr. Bhawalkar accepted this challenge with the determination to develop a safe, efficient, and practical solution for coconut farmers.
His visit to ICTRD was more than a courtesy call—it was an inspiring exchange of ideas, experiences, and vision. Through his interaction with the ICTRD, he encouraged researchers, students, and young innovators to remain curious, persistent, and committed to developing technologies that address real-world challenges.
